This post begins a series of segments of travelling tips for visitors of the Labyrinth of Dreams event. There are plenty of interesting sights in Helsinki as well as in the nearby areas.
The Helsinki City Centre is quite compact, so you can catch most of the main sights on foot. If you are travelling further or if you are simply tired of walking around, the underground metro or the tram is a great and easy way to get around.
In this post we will share our tips regarding travelling to Finland, getting around Helsinki, and different accommodations located in the city.
Money
The currency in Finland is euro (€). If you need to exchange money, you can do it at the airport or at the Central Railway Station. The cheapest way to exchange the money is probably to do it locally at your own bank before coming to Finland, or drawing it from a cash machine on location. If you are in need of cash, look for the nearest Otto cash machine – you can recognise them by their distinct orange colour.
Saapuminen Helsinkiin / Arriving in Helsinki
Helsinkiin on helppo saapua monilla kulkuvälineillä.
Ulkomailta Suomeen matkustaessa usein helpoin tapa saapua on lentokoneella. Helsinki-Vantaan kansainväliseltä lentokentältä pääsee kätevästi Helsingin keskustaan lähijunalla sekä bussilla.
Ruotsista ja Virosta saapuvat kävijät voivat matkustaa helposti Helsinkiin laivalla.
Helsinki is easy to reach by several different means of transport.
When travelling to Finland from abroad, the easiest method of transportation is most often than not by airplane. From the Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport you can efficiently travel to the Helsinki City Centre by either local commuter train, bus, or by taxi.
Visitors arriving from Sweden and Estonia can easily travel to Helsinki by ship.
Saapuminen julkisilla / Arrival by Public Transport
Helsingin päärautatieasema sijaitsee aivan Helsingin keskustassa ja asemalta on vain kivenheitto päätapahtumapaikalle Vanhalle Ylioppilastalolle.
Kaukoliikenteen bussit saapuvat Kamppiin, josta on noin 700 metriä Vanhalle Ylioppilastalolle. Bussien aikataulut ja liput voi tarkistaa Matkahuollon verkkosivuilta.
Raitiovaunulla saapuessa lähimmät pysäkit ovat Ylioppilastalo, Lasipalatsi ja Helsingin päärautatieasema.
The Helsinki Central Railway Station is located in the very heart of Helsinki, in the City Centre, just a stone throw away from the venue of the main event, The Old Student House.
The Long Distance Buses arrive at the bus terminal in Kamppi, from where the distance to the Old Student House is ca 700m. You can check for information on the buses timetables and ticket prices at the Matkahuolto website.
When travelling to the venue by tram, the nearest stops are Ylioppilastalo (The Student House), Lasipalatsi (Glass Palace), and Helsingin päärautatieasema (Helsinki Central Railway Station).
Saapuminen omalla autolla / Arrival by Car
Helsingin keskustaan on helppo saapua myös autolla, ja tarvittaessa Vanhan eteen saa pysähtyä hetkeksi. Keskustassa ei kuitenkaan ole ilmaisia parkkipaikkoja. Suurin osa keskustan parkkipaikoista sijaitsee maksullisissa pysäköintihalleissa ja -alueilla. Kadunvarsilla on jonkin verran maksullisia pysäköintipaikkoja, mutta vapaan paikan löytäminen on ydinkeskustassa haastavaa. Voikin olla helpompaa jättää auto kauemmas parkkiin ja saapua tapahtumapaikalle julkisilla.

The Helsinki City Centre is easy to reach by car, and if necessary, you may also momentarily stop your car outside of the Old Student House. Unfortunately there are no free parking spaces in the area around the City Centre, and the vast majority of the parking spaces are located in indoor car parks and parking lots, which charge by the hour. There are some paid for on-street parking spaces along the streets around the City Centre, but finding any free spaces in this area is quite challenging, as they are very limited. Therefore it may be easier to park your car further away, and arrive at the venue by public transport.

Getting Around in Helsinki
Helpoin tapa kulkea Helsingissä on käyttää julkisen liikenteen menopelejä. Lataamalla HSL-sovelluksen ostat helposti kertalippuja tai vuorokausilippuja niin busseihin, ratikoihin, metroon, lähijuniin kuin Suomenlinnaan kulkevaan lauttaan.
Voit ostaa lippuja myös HSL:n automaateista tai myyntipisteistä. Myyntipisteitä on muun muassa Helsingin rautatieasemalta ja lentokentältä. Useimmat R-kioskit myyvät HSL:n lipputuotteita. Automaatteja löytyy isoimpien pysäkkien läheisyydestä kuten rautatieasemalta ja Suomenlinnan lautan satamasta.
Täältä voit tarkistaa lipunmyyntipisteiden ja automaattien sijainnit.
Vuorokausilippu on hyvä valinta, kun teet useampia matkoja saman päivän aikana. Vuorokausilippuja on ostettavissa 1–13 vuorokaudelle. Labyrinth of Dreamsin tapahtumapaikat sijaitsevat aivan Helsingin keskustassa, joten majoittuessasi keskustan alueella AB-alueen lippu riittää sinulle. Monet nähtävyydet, kuten Suomenlinna, sijaitsevat alueella A. Huomioithan että Helsinki-Vantaa lentoasema sijaitsee vyöhykkeellä C.
AB alueen vuorokausilippu on 9,00 € ja 2 vrk 13,50 €. ABC vyöhykkeen vuorokausilippu maksaa 11 € ja 2 vrk 16,50 €. Tarkista hinnat täältä.
Yhdelle matkalle kätevintä on ostaa kertalippu, joka on voimassa 80–110 minuuttia. Kertalipulla voit vaihtaa myös liikennevälineestä toiseen lipun voimassaolon aikana. ABC vyöhykkeen kertalippu maksaa 4,10 € ja AB-alueen 3,10 €.
Näytä kertalippu ensimmäisen matkan alussa kortinlukijalle bussissa, junassa, raitiovaunussa ja metron liukuportaiden yläpäässä. Riittää, että näytät lippua, sinun ei tarvitse painaa kortinlukijan painikkeita. Lukijasta kuuluu äänimerkki, ja näet näytöllä lipun tiedot. Voit katsoa lipun viimeisen voimassaoloajan myöhemminkin kortinlukijan näytöltä, kun pidät lippua lukualueella.
Lipun voimassaolo alkaa, kun näytät sen kortinlukijalle ensimmäisen matkan alussa. Seuraavilla matkoilla lippu pitää näyttää vain bussissa. Junassa, raitiovaunussa ja metrossa näytät lipun vain, kun konduktööri tai lipuntarkastaja pyytää sen nähtäväkseen.
Liikennevälineeseen saa nousta ja jatkaa perille asti, vaikka lipun voimassaoloaika päättyisi matkan aikana.
The easiest way of getting around in Helsinki is by using public transportation. By downloading the HSL app, you can easily purchase single and day tickets to buses, trams, the metro (underground train), commuter trains, as well as to the ferries travelling to the Suomenlinna fortress.
You can also purchase tickets from HSL’s ticket machines, and at sale and service points. These aforementioned service points can be found at eg. Helsinki Central Railway Station, and at the airport. Most of the R-kioski convenience stores sell HSL tickets. Ticket machines can be found in the immediate vicinity of most of the bigger tram and bus stops, like the ones by the railway station and in the harbour next to the Suomenlinna ferry stop. Day tickets are the best option when you are planning on making several smaller trips within the city during a single day. You can purchase the aforementioned day tickets from one day up to 13 days. And as the venues for the Labyrinth of Dreams event (the main event, after party, and tea party) are all located within the very heart of Helsinki in the City Centre, the ticket for the AB zone will suffice.
Many sights, like the Suomenlinna fortress are located in zone A, however, please observe that the airport is located in the C zone.
A day ticket for the combined AB zones is 9,00€, and a two day ticket is 13,50€, whereas a day ticket for the three combined zones of ABC costs 11€, and a two day ticket for the same combination of zones costs 16,50€. You can check the full list of prices for tickets and fares here.
For an individual trip it is most convenient to purchase a single ticket, which will be valid between 80 and 110 minutes. This aforementioned ticket also allows for transfer between different means of transportation (eg. tram to bus, and from bus to metro etc.), as long as the ticket is valid. For the ABC zone a single ticket costs 4,10€, and for the AB zone it is 3,10€.
When utilising your single ticket for the first time, and using a card format instead of the app, please show your card to the public transport card reader once entering the bus, train, and/or tram – or when travelling on the metro, show the card to the reader on the top of the escalator before ascending to the platform. Simply showing the card to the card reader will suffice (pressing the card very lightly against the reader), and there is no need to press any of the buttons on the machine. The card reader will beep once the machine registers the card and charges the travelling fee, and it will show you the information of your ticket/card on the screen of the reader. Should you like to check how much longer your ticket is valid later on during the trip, you needn’t but show the card to the reader again, and the screen will display the desired information.
The validity of the ticket begins from the moment that you show it to the card reader at the beginning of your first trip in public transportation. The ticket only has to be shown again when entering buses during your trip. During the following segments of the trip, if travelling by train, tram, or metro, you only have to show your ticket if requested to do so by a train conductor or ticket inspector. You may enter a mass transit vehicle and resume your journey until the end, even if the validity of your ticket expires during the trip.
ATTENTION! Helsinki has a lot of ticket inspectors on the prowl, and the fine for travelling without a ticket is 80 euros! So be sure to purchase said tickets before entering any mass transit vehicles or public transport managed by HSL.
Helsinki Card
Helsinki Card on matkailijan etukortti, joka on pääsylippu useisiin museoihin ja nähtävyyksiin. Sillä saa etuja ja alennuksia monista palveluista ja ostoksista. Kortilla voi myös matkustaa HSL:n joukkoliikenteessä 1–3 vuorokauden ajan. Helsinki Card City kelpaa vyöhykkeillä AB ja Helsinki Card Region vyöhykkeillä ABC.

The Helsinki Card is a traveller’s card; a City Pass, that allows you entry to most of the museums and sights in Helsinki, as well as granting you benefits and discounts on many services and purchases. You can also use the card to travel with the HSL public transport system for a limited time; between one and three days. There are different types of the Helsinki Card, and the Helsinki Card CITY version is viable for travel on the AB zones, and the Helsinki Card REGION will be applicable on the combined zones of ABC.
The card can be purchased at Stromma Finland.

Scandic Grand Central offers a deluxe stay at an exceptionally convenient location at the Helsinki railway station. Scandic Group also has several other hotels in Helsinki within different price ranges.
Omena Hotels are a great choice for a budget traveller. There are two Omena Hotels at the city centre: Omena Hotelli Yrjönkatu ja Omena Hotelli Lönnrotinkatu.
Hotel Arthur also offers affordable accommodation in the city centre, near the Main Railway Station in Kaisaniemi. This hotel is familiar to previous Hellocon attendees from our tea party with Baby the Stars Shine Bright!
Spa hotels in Helsinki are mainly larger hotels with small wellness sections, which are perfect for relaxation for adult travellers. An exception to the rule is Flamingo Spa in Vantaa with their large spa section, which also allows minors. For more information, check Flamingo Spa’s own website.
