Crash Course on Lace

13:30–14:15
Luentosali / Lecture Hall

We can all agree that lace is a crucial part of lolita fashion. That’s why this lecture offers a quick history lesson on the development of different lace types. You’ll learn how and where lace as a fashion phenomenon started and how modern machine-made lace is emulating the original handicraft techniques.

Your lecturer, Elli Ojala, is an avid lace enthusiast and hobbyist, with a background in fashion and textile studies.

Tervetuloa oppimaan käpypitsin perusteet! Käpypitsi, tatting, frivolite, tämä pitsitekniikka kulkee monella nimellä.

Työpajassa opimme käpypitsin alkeet pienen harjoitustyön kautta.

Työpaja pyörii koko päivän 5 hlö/tunti ryhmäkokoonpanolla. Ryhmien välissä 15 minuutin tauko. Opetus onnistuu suomeksi ja englanniksi ja opettaja lainaa välineistön ja tarjoaa opetusmateriaalin. (Ps. Tilaan voi halutessaan tulla tai jäädä tekemään itsenäisesti käsitöitä, kunhan se ei häiritse opetusta).

Come and learn the basics of tatting! Shuttle lace, tatting, frivolité, this lace-making technique is known by many names.

In the workshop, we’ll learn the fundamentals of tatting through a small practice piece.

The workshop runs throughout the day in groups of 5 people per hour, with a 15-minute break between sessions. Instruction is available in both Finnish and English. The teacher will provide the necessary tools and teaching materials.

(P.S. You’re welcome to come into the space or stay to work on your own crafts, as long as it doesn’t disturb the teaching.)

Historical Japanese Girls’ Magazines and Lolita

14:30–15:15
Luentosali / Lecture Hall

During the late Meiji era (beginning of the 1900s) and the Taisho era (1912–1926), girls’ schools became increasingly common in Japan. New forms of culture developed for the students of girls’ high schools, including first magazines for them. Magazines featured cute illustrations, recipes, and lifestyle advice. This marked the beginning of the kawaii culture, as the illustrations often depicted sparkly-eyed girls in cute dresses that remind us present-day viewers of alternative fashion. In this lecture, Nita Mäenpää gives a brief introduction to the cultural history of Japanese girls’ magazines of the period. She will then present some illustrations from the magazines and demonstrate how she would use lolita fashion to emulate those looks.

The Making of the Lockhart Universe

15:30–16:00
Luentosali / Lecture Hall

An exclusive reading from Lockhart Returns, with time for questions and behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the book! Expect some funny anecdotes and a peek behind the frilly curtain at what goes into making a lolita novel treasured by the community.

Lockhart Mansion is a female-fronted, unique look into a fashion subculture with a supernatural twist. In the sequel, Lockhart Returns, frills meet chills in a witty horror-comedy. Three fashionable friends find themselves navigating university life, mysterious housemates, and unexpected romances. And all while dealing with a house that refuses to stay quiet.

Ducky is a self-published author writing under the pen name D.H. Dhaenens. She has six books to her name, including the EGL-centric Lockhart Mansion series.

Takarazuka Flowers and Dandies

16:00–16:30
Pääsali / Main Hall

Have you ever heard of the Japanese all-female musical theatre troupe that has been shocking and challenging audiences since 1913? Jensku now invites you to come and hear about the Takarazuka Revue and its impact on popular culture and gender roles. At the same time, she will also ponder what the shoujo-phenomenon really was, how it relates to the Takarazuka Troupe and whether its influence can be seen in today’s EGL community.

Knitting for Lolita: Knit and Crochet for Your EGL Warderobe

16:15–17:00
Luentosali / Lecture Hall

Onko puuttuva unelmavaattesi muhkea neuletakki?

Yarncrafts have soared in popularity during the past few years, and cardigans and other knits have been staple lolita fashion pieces since the dawn of the style. How would one go about combining these hobbies? What kind of pieces one can knit for one’s own EGL wardrobe, what kind of skills does it require, and where to find suitable patterns?

Lecturer Maria approaches these questions with a solid background in knitting as well as working in the yarn trade, and she would like to answer these questions (and many more) and hopes to inspire you to pick up the yarn, needles and hooks!

The lecture will be held in English, however, Finnish material has also been prepared due to specific terminology related to the crafts.

A (Brief) History of Astrology

16:45–17:30
Pääsali / Main Hall

Twinkle, twinkle, little star. A brief review of astrology and the relations between celestial objects and our material world.

Humans have looked up to the stars as long as we’ve had eyes to see and the anatomy to look up. Across cultures, continents, and time, people have found meaning in the movement of planets, translating the night sky into themes such as human relations and predictions of the future. We may find ourselves trying to appease the heavenly bodies, but maybe we needn’t to. Instead of asking what you can do for the stars, ask what the stars can do for you.

Artificially Alternative

17:15–17:45
Luentosali / Lecture Hall

AI (artificial intelligence) has become a part of our daily life during these past few years. Its impact on the world has been undeniable, both in good and bad.

This lecture will cover the very basics of what AI is, what it’s actually useful for and how it has affected creative fields such as clothing design.

Is there any potential use for AI in EGL fashion?

(Please note that this is in no way pro-AI or anti-AI! The lecturer has studied both music and IT.)
