Beyond the Shimmering Stars takes place in Tampere!

Tervetuloa Tampereelle! Seuraava Helloconin tapahtuma järjestetään syyskuussa 2025 punatiilitehtaiden värittämässä koskikaupungissa. 

Tämä ei ole ensimmäinen kertamme Tampereella, sillä ensimmäinen Hello!Market järjestettiin Tampereen Monitoimitalolla vuonna 2020.

Tampere on Suomen kolmanneksi suurin kaupunki, joka perustettiin vuonna 1779 Ruotsin kuningas Kustaa III:n päätöksellä. Tiesitkö, että kaupungissa on sytytetty pohjoismaiden ensimmäinen sähkövalo, valmistettu ensimmäiset Suomessa tehdyt veturi ja automobiili, lähetetty Suomen ensimmäinen yleisradiolähetys, soitettu maailman ensimmäinen NMT-puhelu (ns. 1G verkkoa käyttävä puhelu) ja GSM-puhelu (ns. 2G verkkoa käyttävä puhelu), sekä rakennettu Suomen ensimmäinen jäähalli?

Welcome to Tampere! Hellocon’s next event will take place in September 2025 in the riverside city characterized by its red-brick industrial charm.

This is not our first time in Tampere, as the first Hello!Market was held at Monitoimitalo in 2020.

Tampere is the third largest city in Finland, founded in 1799 by order of King Gustav III of Sweden. Did you know that the city was home to the first electric light in the Nordic countries, the first locomotive and automobile made in Finland, the first public radio broadcast in Finland, the world’s first NMT (1G network) call, the first GSM (2G network) call, and Finland’s first ice hockey arena?

Tampereella on otettu lukuisia teknologisia harppauksia jo 1800-luvulta alkaen. Ensimmäisten edistysaskeleiden takana oli skotlantilaissyntyisen James Finlaysonin perustama puuvillatehdas, jota kehitti eteenpäin tehtaan seuraava johtaja Wilhelm von Nottbeck. Puuvillatehtaan pioneereja seurasi Tammerkosken varrella toinen tunnettu edelläkävijä, Nokia, jonka kasvu ja romahdus ennen älypuhelimia tunnetaan kansainvälisestikin. Urbaanilegendan mukaan mikään ei voi rikkoa Nokian 3310-mallin puhelinta (mutta emme kehota kokeilemaan).

Historiaa huokuvan tehdaskaupungin lisäksi Tampere on teatterikaupunki, jossa toimii toistakymmentä ammattiteatteria. Niistä ikonisimmat ovat Työväenteatteri ja Tampereen teatteri. Suosittelemme vahvasti tutustumaan muidenkin Tampereella toimivien teattereiden ohjelmistoon! 

Tampere has been at the forefront of technological advancements since the 1800s. The first strides were made by the cotton factory founded by Scottish-born James Finlayson and further developed by its next director, Wilhelm von Nottbeck. Another renowned pioneer from the banks of Tammerkoski river is Nokia, whose rise and fall before the era of smartphones is internationally recognized. Legend has it that the Nokia 3310 model phone is virtually indestructible (though we don’t recommend testing this).

In addition to its historic industrial appeal, Tampere is a city of theatre, home to over a dozen professional theaters. The most iconic of these are the Tampere Workers’ Theatre (Tampereen Työväen teatteri) and Tampere Theatre (Tampereen Teatteri). We highly recommend exploring the programs of other theaters in Tampere as well!

Kaupungilla on myös synkkä historiansa. Suomen sisällissodan lopputaistelut käytiin Tampereella vuonna 1918. Sodan päätteeksi Tampereen taisteluissa hävinneet koottiin nykyisin joulutoristaan tunnetulle Keskustorille ja siirrettiin siitä Kalevankankaalle venäläisten kasarmiin perustetulle vankileirille. Kyseinen kasarmirakennus on yhä olemassa, mutta se ei ole yleisölle avoin. Tarkkanäköisimmät voivat bongata luodinjälkiä muun muassa Tammelassa sijaitsevan keikka- ja tapahtumapaikan Tavara-aseman seinistä. 

Tänä päivänä Tampere muistetaan tekstiilimerkille nimensä antaneen Finlaysonin tehtaan lisäksi täkäläisestä musiikkityylistä Manserockista ja jääkiekosta. Älä hämmenny, jos sinulta kysytään ensimmäisenä Ilves vai Tappara. Kyseessä ovat paikalliset jääkiekkojoukkueet ja paikallinen tapa selvittää, kenen joukoissa seisot. Tiesitkö muuten, ettei Tappara ole joukkueen alkuperäinen nimi? TBK eli Tammerfors Bollklubb perustettiin vuonna 1932 ja vuonna 1955 emoseura perusti uuden Tappara-nimisen seuran houkuttelemaan uusia kiekkoharrastajia riveihinsä. 

The city also has a darker chapter in its history. The final battles of the Finnish Civil War were fought in Tampere in 1918. After the war, the defeated forces were gathered at the Tampere Central Square, which is now known for its Christmas market. The prisoners were then transported to a prison camp set up in the old Russian barracks in Kalevankangas. The barracks building still stands today but it is not open to the public. The most observant may spot bullet marks on the walls of Tavara-asema, a concert and event venue in Tammela, among other places.

Today, Tampere is known not only for the Finlayson factory, which gave its name to the textile brand, but also for the local music style of Manserock and ice hockey. Don’t be surprised if someone asks you “Ilves or Tappara” at first encounter. These are local ice hockey teams and the local way of determining which side you’re on. By the way, did you know that Tappara was not the original name of the team? TBK, or Tammerfors Bollklubb, was founded in 1932, and in 1955, the parent club established a new team named Tappara to attract more hockey enthusiasts to its ranks.
